Telfair High School Ranks Among Top 4% In Nation

Kempner High School – the Fort Bend Independent School District high school attended by Telfair students – ranks among the top 4 percent of public high schools in the nation, according to the 2010 “America’s Best High Schools” report by Newsweek magazine.Just over 1,600 of the nation’s 27,000 high schools – or about 6 percent – made the cut for the Newsweek list, which picks the best high schools in the country based on how hard school staffs work to challenge students with advanced-placement college-level courses and tests.Kempner ranked 1093 on the list, placing it with the top 4 percent of all public high schools nationwide. To compile the list, Newsweek researchers took the total number of Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate or Cambridge (AICE) tests given at a school each year, then divided that number by the number of graduating seniors each spring. Each list is based on the previous year’s data, so the 2010 list has each school’s numbers for 2009. Newsweek has compiled the study since 1998 in conjunction with The Washington Post.“Great schools are one of the major reasons why Telfair ranked as the number six community in the United States for new-home sales in 2009, so it’s great to see our high school rank so high in the nation as well,” said Heather Gould, marketing director for Newland Communities, developer of the 2,018-acre Telfair community.  “We salute all the students, teachers, parents and other community members who have helped Kempner High School achieve this very impressive ranking.”To see the complete results of the Newsweek study, click here.
